I recommend dry food only. Shih-Tzus are casual eaters and dry food can be left out for them without them overeating. I do not recommend feeding them moist food. It is not as healthy for their teeth.
Treats
Natural Balance L.I.T. small breed grain free.
Fruit (limit intake) and raw vegetables in small portions such as baby carrots, broccoli, or apple chunks (no skin) blueberries, strawberries, bananas are healthy low-calorie treats. All cut up into little bite size pieces.
Chewing
What I have found that my Shih Tzus love are HEART to TAIL Dental Sticks. I buy them at Aldi. I only give them a half of one. Please read the package.
Vitamin Supplements
NuVet is what I recommend
Flea and Tick Control
It has been my experience that Frontline Plus is the only product that has worked. This product should not be applied until at least three days after their bath. Please do not use over-the-counter flea dips. These can be toxic to their sensitive skin.
Anti-worm Medications
I recommend using Heartgard once a month.

You must be sure that the anal area is shaved often. It is very important that this be done. I recommend you either learn to groom your Shih Tzu yourself or find a good caring groomer. I recommend about every six weeks.
The Dew Claw
Shih Tzus have a fifth toenail on the inside of their front two paws and on occasion the back paws as well

The Dew Claw
Shih Tzus have a fifth toenail on the inside of their front two paws and on occasion the back paws as well. Please make sure that this nail is clipped as well as all of the others.
Brushes
I use a small slicker brush and a metal comb. When using the slicker brush, use only the weight of the brush (do not apply downward pressure) to brush the hair. Brush or comb any area only about five times.
Bathing
I recommend using (human) baby shampoo. Do not use conditioners, as these tend to weigh down and dull the hair. Do not bathe your Shih Tzu more than once every 3-4 weeks. Bathing dries out their sensitive skin.
Eye Stains
I highly recommend the NuVet Plus Canine Wafers. Its amazing how great these wafers help the Shih Tzu not only with their eye stains but also in so many other areas.
